Bulls Finish Third At New York State Collegiate Championships

Three Bulls' Wrestlers Claim First Place

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team finished third out of 21 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championships held at Nassau Community College, Jan 19-20. The Bulls finished with 134 points, behind Army (172.5 points) and Cornell (167 points).

Seniors Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) (184) and Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) (165) and junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) (141) finished first in their respective weight classes. Seven out of the eight UB wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight classes.

UB had more wrestlers place than any other team, however, four of the Bulls' starters did not wrestle due to injury. Seniors John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) and Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) and sophomores Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois) sat out and did not compete.

"The team performed very well under the circumstances," said Head Coach Jim Beichner. "They always find a way to come out with a strong performance no matter what the adversity is."

Senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) (149) and freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) (157) both finished third in their brackets. Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) finished fourth in the 125-pound weight class while Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen HS) finished fifth at 174 pounds. UB did not enter a wrestler in the 197 and the HWT weight classes.

The Bulls season record is 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference after recording dual-meet wins against Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois University. UB's next competition is a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Alumni Arena at 1 p.m. against MAC rival, Kent State.
