Bulls Capture New York State Wrestling Championship

In the field of 17 teams, the University at Buffalo wrestling team captured their ninth New York State Wrestling Intercollegiate Championship on the campus of Oswego State. The Bulls took first place by scoring 168.5 points with Mickey Moran, Nate Rock and Kevin Smith each capturing titles in their respective weight classes.

In defense of his title at 184, Moran wrestled a close fought match, coming out the victor at 184. As the top-seed at 133, Smith captured this year's title while Rock was the winner at 174.

At 125, Dan Bishop took second place for the third straight year. Freshman Mark Lewandowski made his debut taking second place at 141. For the second year in a row, Jimmy Hamel took second-place at 197. At 149, Desi Green placed second.

John Martin-Cannon took third place at 157. At 165, Ron Majerus took fifth place while at 285, Brett Correll placed seventh.

In the "B" brackets, wrestling unattached at 125, Dylan Dabolt would take third place. At 133, Taylor Golba placed fourth. Ryan Black took third place. Unattached Matthew Bogardus captured the 174-lb crown. Jason Brown captured the 184-lb championship. At 197, Tyler Peter took second place. Wrestling unattached, Jedd Mason captured the 285-lb title.

MAC Individual Rankings

Mickey Moran

In the MAC Individual Rankings for January, the Bulls had wrestlers ranked in the top five of each weight class. At 125, #4t Bishop; at 149, #2 Green; at 157, #4 Cannon; at 174, #4 Rock; at 184, #2 Moran; at 197, #2 Hamel and at 285, #3 Correll.

Next Up: Ohio

The Bulls will be in action on Sunday, January 25 at 12:00 pm as they travel to Athens, OH to take on MAC opponent Ohio Univeristy. The Bulls and Bobcats are currently 1-0 in MAC competition.

The Bulls will look to improve their all-time record of 3-9 against the Bobcats. In last year's meeting between these two teams on January 26, UB walked away with a 24-9 victory. Possible rematches include Bishop versus Heath Allen at 125, Moran versus Erik Schuth at 184 and Hamel versus Tim Samson at 197. Smith, Moran and Hamel were each victorious in their matches versus Ohio.
