UB Places Fourth as a Team at New York State Championships

Bentley, Jacoutot, Guarino, G. Cooper and Bontempo Each Finish Second

OSWEGO, NY The Bulls wresting team finished with a total of 129 team points, good for fourth place at the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships. Only Army (129.5), Hofstra (166) and Cornell (207.5) finished ahead of Buffalo in the field of 23 teams.

At 141 pounds, Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) won his semifinal match over Dustin Winn of Oneonta in overtime, but he was pinned by Army's Phillip Simpson in the final at 6:12. Bentley - who could not defend his state title - placed second, as did four other Bulls.

Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) beat Nassau's Ryan Maurer by 10-4 decision before losing a 17-4 major decision to Jason DeBruin of Hofstra. Jacoutot wrestles at the 149-pound weight class.

165-pound Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) won his semifinal match over Oswego's Noah Seitel by a 6-4 decision. Then, in an attempt to win his second consecutive state title, Guarino was decisioned 4-1 by Scott Roth of Cornell.

Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) advanced to the 174-pound final by winning a 2-1 decision over Hofstra's Ralph Everett. Jim Stanec of Cornell then beat Cooper by an 8-3 decision.

At 184 pounds, Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) won his semifinal match over R.I.T.'s Tony Wallace by a 16-3 major decision. Bontempo lost in the final to Cornell's Clint Wattenberg by a 4-2 decision.

Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) lost in the semifinals, but rallied back with a pair of victories to place third at 197 pounds. Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) went 1-2 on the day to wind up in fourth place at the 125-pound weight class. Both 157-pound Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) and heavyweight Mike Cooper (Jacksonville, FL/University Christian) finished in eighth place in their respective weight classes.

UB has its first Mid-American Conference dual meet in nearly two months when it travels to Kent State to take on the Golden Flashes at 7 p.m. next Friday. Buffalo is currently 1-1 in MAC dual meets.
