Buffalo Leads After Day One of New York State Championships

Nine Bulls will take part in the semifinals on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – After the first day of competition at the 39th Annual New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships, the University at Buffalo leads the 18-team field with 91.5 points. Nine of the ten Buffalo wrestlers in the competition will be in tomorrow's semifinals. In second place behind UB is Army with 85 points, Cornell sits in third with 71.5 points and last year's champion Columbia is in fourth with 69 points.

Sophomore Dan Bishop (Whitehall, NY/Whitehall) and senior John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) have each pitched two shutouts en route to reaching the semifinals. Bishop, the third seed at 125 pounds, defeated John Scheidell of Ithaca 6-0 is round one and scored a 15-0 technical fall over Erik Johanson of Oneonta in the second match. Cummings, the top-seed at 157, earned a 4-0 decision over Greg Davis of Ithaca and a 2-0 decision over Tyshaun Patrick of Nassau.

Along with Cummings, redshirt freshman Jimmy Hamel (Natick, MA/Natick) is also a top-seeded UB wrestler that has advanced to the quarterfinals. Hamel opened the tournament with a win over Carl Landers of Cornell by an 8-5 decision. He then followed with a 20-5 technical fall at 5:30 over Mike DiOrio of Oneonta.

Unseeded Joe Wilson (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) reached the semifinals at 133 pounds thanks to a mild upset in the quarters. After defeating Chad Winowich of Ithaca 7-4 in his opening bout, Wilson dispatched of the fourth-seed, Joe Ranzenbach of NYU, via a fall at 5:01. Wilson will not wrestling the top-seed, Chris Notte of Nassau in the semifinals.

Andrew Stella (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had a pair of dominating wins in the 141-pound weight class. Stella, the fourth seed, first pinned Ryan Fallot of Brockport in 2:20 and then earned a decisive 10-1 win over fifth-seeded Mike Tutunjian of Wagner.

A pair of second-seeded Bulls have each reached the semifinals. At 149 pounds, Pat Lloyd (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) enters the semifinals with victories over John Schnieder of RIT and Dale DeBacco of Niagara County Community College. Lloyd downed Schnieder by technical fall 20-3 and DeBacco by a 5-2 decision. Senior Mike Ragusa (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro), is into the semifinals in the 174-pound weight class, defeated Colin McDonald of Cornell 10-5 and Jared Teal of Oswego in the quarterfinals 14-4. Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) is seeded second at 184 pounds and had a dominating victory in his opening match, defeating Eddie Broderick of Wagner, 20-6. Moran followed that victory up with a win over Chris Gandolfi of Nassau in the quarterfinals, 10-4.

In the heavyweight division, senior Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) pulled out two one-point decisions to reach the semifinals. Parker defeated Mike Sprigg of Army, 5-4, in the opening round and then scored a 4-3 win over Columbia's Ryan Flores in the quarterfinals. Parker will be paired up against undefeated Trevor Hiffa from Oneonta in the semifinals.

In the 'B' bracket, Dylan Dabolt (Attica, NY/Attica), Evan Veney (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Jason Brown (Cato, NY/Cato-Meridian) each won individual championships.

The New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships will conclude tomorrow, Saturday, January 19. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 am in Alumni Arena
