Buffalo Picks up First Win at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, VA - Freshman Dana Gingerich (Spring Grove, PA/DeLone Catholic) (141 pounds) registered two pins as the University at Buffalo wrestling team lost in the first round of the Virginia Duals at Hampton Coliseum to nationally-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield, 33-9, before picking up its first dual meet win of the year in the consolation bracket against North Dakota State. Gingerich and sophomore Jake Blowers (Johnstown, NY/Broadalbin-Perth HS) (165 pounds) each tallied pins and the Bulls (1-6 overall) won the first four matches and six out of 10 to take down the Bisons (5-2 overall). North Dakota State, in its first year of Division I wrestling, lost its first dual meet in 24 meets in the first round of the tournament to Rider. Sophomore Mark McKnight (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) (125 pounds) picked up major decision over Mike Megar, 12-3, to start off the match and sophomore Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) followed with an 11-5 win over Nick Magee to take a 7-0 lead. Gingerich's pin 58 seconds into the match against two-time Division II All-American Lucas Christianson and a 3-2 decision by sophomore Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) (149 pounds) over Peter Hayes helped the Bulls to a 16-0 lead. After a Bison decision at 157, Blowers pinned Andy Pickar 13 seconds into the third period to give the Bulls a 23-6 lead. It was Blowers' first career dual meet win. Junior Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) (184 pounds) picked up an 8-4 decision against Matt Hermann to clinch the win for the Bulls. In the first round, Cal State-Bakersfield (8-3 overall), ranked 23rd in the nation by W.I.N. Magazine, picked up the first two wins before Gingerich pinned Matt Shumm to close the Roadrunners' lead to 9-6. However, the Roadrunners picked up the next five matches, including a fall, a technical fall and a major decision to open up a 30-6 lead before junior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) beat Bryan Travers in an 8-6 decision. All four of the Roadrunners nationally-ranked wrestlers won, including sixth-ranked Efren Ceballos over McKnight, ranked 20th in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, 10-4. The Bulls are back in action at the Virginia Duals at 10:00 am on Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum, facing Edinboro. Edinboro beat Buffalo, 24-9, on Dec. 11 at Jamestown Community College.
