Bulls Split a Pair of Matches at Northern Illinois

In the first dual of the day against Northern Illinois, the Bulls dropped the first three matches and were never able to overcome the deficit. Ryan Needle (Newfane, NY/Newfane) earned the first win for UB at 149 pounds with a 5-4 decision, cutting the NIU lead in the dual to 12-3. But the Huskies won the next three matches, increasing their overall lead to 25-6. Buffalo won the final three matches of the dual, as Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) won a 9-5 decision at 184 pounds, Jimmy Hamel (Natick, MA/Natick) earned a 6-5 decision at 197 thanks to a takedown with 15 seconds left in his match and Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) was victorious in the heavyweight bout 3-2, also scoring a takedown in the final minute of his match.

Buffalo rebounded in their second match of the day, defeating Findlay, 25-6. Dan Bishop (Whitehall, NY/Whitehall) opened the dual with a major decision victory, 10-1, at 125 pounds. Joe Wilson (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury), Andrew Stella (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and Needle followed with victories, giving the Bulls a commanding 13-0 lead. After a Findlay victory at 157 pounds, UB won the next four matches as Scott Rendos (Brockway, PA/Brockway), Mike Ragusa (Foxboro, MA), Moran and Hamel each earned victories by decision. Findlay ended the dual with an overtime victory in the heavyweight bout.

The Bulls return to action at Alumni Arena next Friday and Saturday, January 18-19, when they host the 39th Annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships. Wrestling begins on Friday at 10:00 am.
