UB Rally Falls Short, Bulls Lose 26-15 to Clarion

Guarino, Bontempo, Bentley and Jacoutot Earn Wins for UB

BUFFALO, NY After pulling to within four points prior to the final match of the meet, the Bulls suffered a 26-15 loss at the hands of the Clarion Golden Eagles. Buffalo now has a mark of 3-4 in dual meets.

With Buffalo trailing 20-9, junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) and senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) scored consecutive victories to put UB within striking range in its final match.

Freshman Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) was then defeated by Jeremy Reitz at 157 pounds. After a hard fought match, Edwards was disqualified with only seconds remaining due to flagrant misconduct. That foul awarded Clarion six team points and subtracted one from the Bulls' total.

Bentley, wrestling at 141 pounds, won his match by major decision over Stephen Stremple by a 13-4 score. That victory sparked the Bulls' comeback attempt, which Jacoutot kept rolling in his 3-2 win over Dominic Surra at 149 pounds.

Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) opened the meet by earning a major decision over Jamie Durkin of Clarion. That was the 50th career overall victory for the senior who wrestles at the 165-pound weight class.

The Bulls' other victory came at the 184-pound weight class. Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) won by technical fall at 6:04 by earning all 16 of the match's points. That was Bontempo's first competition since injuring his ankle in a victory over Ohio State's Anton Talamantes on January 5th.

UB will now prepare for the New York State Championships, which take place at Oswego on January 18th and 19th.
