Weekly Wrestling ReleaseAthlete of the Week At 149 pounds, sophomore Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) overcame a seven point first period deficit to down his Pitt-Johnstown opponent, 11-9, in the final match of the meet to seal the Bull's victory. Bentley currently leads the team in several statistical catgories including near falls (2) with five, reversals with five and overall falls with nine.
Bulls Down Defending D-II Champs Buffalo (6-0) maintained their perfect record by defeating defending Division II National Champions Pitt-Johstown (5-3), currently ranked sixth in the nation, by a score of 19-13 at Alumni Arena on Saturday (1/8). Victorious Bulls included Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) at 165 pounds (7-6), David Guarino (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) at 174 pounds (1-0), and Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) at 197 pounds (13-5). Heavyweight Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) and Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) (133 lbs.) both defeated opponents who were each ranked 11th in the nation by scores of 13-7 and 11-7, respectively.
Bulls Finally Top Mountain Cats Saturday's victory against Pitt-Johnstown was the Bulls first against the Mountain Cats in five meetings. UB is now 1-3-1 against the Division II powerhouse.
UB Off To Best Start Since 1974-75 Season The Bulls 6-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign is the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record.
Beichner Gears Up For Alma Mater UB prepares to extend their winning streak to seven as they take on Clarion in UB's Alumni Arena on Friday at 7:00 pm. Buffalo's Head Coach Jim Beichner is a former assistant coach and 1987 alumnus of Clarion. He was also a two-time All-American during his tenure with the Golden Eagles. The last time Buffalo faced Clarion was during the 1976-77 campaign. The Golden Eagles lead the overall series between the two programs, 4-3. UB Faces Tough National Competition The Bulls wrestling program continues its tradition of wrestling the finest competition in the nation. In upcoming matches, they will face some of the best wrestling talent in the country as Buffalo will meet Cornell (2/17), Edinboro (1/16), and MAC opponent Central Michigan (2/12), who are all top-25 ranked Division I wrestling programs according to InterMat's wrestling rankings. The Bulls have already faced wrestlers from Bloomsburg and Oregon State, both InterMat honorable mention recipient teams.
