COLUMBUS, OH - Sophomore Mark McKnight (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) picked up two wins, including his 50th career win, to lead the University at Buffalo wrestling team at the Buckeye Duals on Saturday. However, Buffalo still could not manage to get its first dual meet win of the season, falling to Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois, 20-15, Tennessee-Chattanooga, 29-6, and nationally-ranked Northwestern (19th in the WrestlingMall.com poll), 29-9.

Sophomore Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) also picked up two wins at the meet, improving to 3-2 on the year in dual meets.

Buffalo (0-5 overall, 0-1 MAC) opened the day with a tough loss to Northern Illinois. The Huskies jumped out to a 6-0 lead with wins at 141 and 149 pounds before freshman Scott Rendos (Brockway, PA/Brockway) tied the score by pinning Alex Nelson. Northern Illinois regained the lead by winning the next two matches at 165 and 174, one by major decision to take a 13-6 lead at the halfway mark.

Buffalo responded well, as junior Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) (184 pounds) and Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) (197 pounds) earned decisions to close the gap to one point at 13-12.

Joe Sapp took the wind out of Buffalo's sails in the heavyweight match, though, earning a 5-4 decision over Parker, his lone loss of the day.

McKnight (125 pounds) won the ninth match of the meet, 8-3 over Chad Vandervier, keeping the meet a one-point affair moving into the tenth match. The win was also McKnight's 50th of his career, becoming the fastest non-transfer to reach the mark in UB's MAC era. McKnight is currently ranked 15th in the nation by the WrestlingMall.com and is holding strong with a 16-10 overall record, with all but one loss coming to a Top-20 wrestler.

In the final match, Sam Hiatt, ranked 18th in the nation by WrestlingMall.com, scored a major decision over sophomore Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) (133 pounds), 8-0, to complete the 20-15 victory for the Huskies.

In the Bulls' second meet of the day, Tennessee-Chatanooga won seven straight matches to open the meet, putting the outcome in little doubt. Parker (heavyweight) and Budd each scored decisions in the meet, both in the final three matches.

In the final meet, Northwestern won the first match by pin before sophomore Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) won his first match of the day to cut the lead Northwestern in half.

However, the Wildcats took the next five matches to build a 26-3 lead before Parker and McKnight took back-to-back decisions to close UB's scoring for the day.

UB returns to the mats on Friday as it travels to Hampton, VA for another tough test at the Virginia Duals, the largest college dual meet team tournament in the country. Action starts in the Hampton Coliseum at 9:00 am.
