Bulls Wrestling Splits In Busy WeekendBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team concluded a busy weekend with a 2-2 dual meet record after traveling to Clarion and Columbus, OH to compete in events. The Bulls opened their weekend action on Friday night at traditional power Clarion, and the host Golden Eagles were ready to avenge a narrow loss to Buffalo last year. After a win by senior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) at 184 pounds (4-2 decision) to open the match, Clarion took the next four bouts to take control of the match. Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley), temporarily broke Clarion's momentum with an 8-6 decision over Frank Edgar at 141 pounds, but Clarion rebounded to win at 149 and 157 pounds to take control of the match and go on to a 25-9 victory. David Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) posted the Bulls' only other win with a 4-1 win at 165 pounds over Pete Korshefskie. After the match with Clarion, the Bulls traveled to Columbus, OH to take part in the Buckeye Duals hosted by Ohio State. Buffalo finished 2-1 on the day, handily defeating Cleveland State and Tennessee-Chattanooga before bowing to the host Buckeyes in the final match of the day. The two standouts on the day for the Bulls were 184-pounder Josh States and freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) at 157 pounds. Both States and Black won all three of their matches on the day, with each posting a fall. States improved his record on the season to 16-3 with four victories over the weekend. In UB's win over Cleveland State, the Bulls got pins from States, Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) and Bentley in a 34-10 win. Kegel won both matches on the day to improve to 21-3 overall on the season. Against Tennessee-Chattanooga, the Bulls won five of the seven matches that were contested as UTC forfeited three weight classes. UB got a pin from Black at 157 to close the match in a 36-6 win, while Guarino, States, Kegel and Bentley all won by decision. In the day's final match, the Bulls were beaten by Ohio State, 31-6, without three starters as Charlie Voorhees (125), Shawn Kegel (133) and Joe Downey (197) didn't go for Buffalo. States and Black were the only UB wrestlers able to put points on the board. The Bulls will next be in action this weekend when they travel to Charlottesville, VA to take part in
the University of Virginia Duals. |
