Bulls Grapplers Post 1-2 Mark at Buckeye DualsCOLUMBUS, OH - The University at Buffalo wrestling team was victorious in one of the three matches they participated in at the Buckeye Duals. The Bulls opened the meet with a 25-9 loss to the host Ohio State Buckeyes, before rebounding with a 21-16 victory over Eastern Illinois. Buffalo closed out the meet by losing to another Big Ten school, this time Indiana, by a 30-10 score. Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) won two of three matches at 165 pounds. Also coming away from the meet with a 2-1 mark were 149-pounder Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), and Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) at 141 pounds.
Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area), competing at the 184-pound weight class, won in the only match he participated in. Bontempo defeated Ohio State's Anton Talamantes, who was ranked 15th in the nation at his weight class. Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen/Brockport) wrestled the other two matches at 184 pounds, winning one of the two. The other major upset scored by UB was registered by Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) at 157 pounds when he knocked off 12th ranked Josh Janson of Ohio State. Edwards lost his other two matches, however. Others posting a 1-2 mark at the meet were Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) at 197 pounds, 174-pounder Bill Prince (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg), and Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) at 125 pounds. Brian Sebaaly (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Josh Crisafulli (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) each wrestled at 133 pounds, but neither could tally a win. Mahnseah Boley (Brockport, NY/Brockport/Niagara County Community College) went 0-2 as a heavyweight. Buffalo actually led the match with Ohio State at 9-3 through four matches, but lost the last six, including one by technical fall and two by major decision, as Ohio State rallied for the 25-9 win. UB winners were Bontempo, Prince and Edwards. In their win over Eastern Illinois, the Bulls used two crucial victories by Bentley and Jacoutot to vault to a 21-16 victory. They had been trailing 16-14, before the major decision by Bentley and the decision by Jacoutot closed out the match. Other Buffalo winners were Cerminara and Ben Cooper - both by major decision - along with Guarino and Voorhees. During the loss to Indiana, only Guarino, Jacoutot and Bentley posted wins for Buffalo. Bentley's came by major decision. Next up for the Bulls is a match-up with Clarion - head coach Jim Beichner's alma mater -
