Bulls Swept in Home Opener

BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team was swept in their dual meet season opener, losing to Georgia State 18-15 and Central Michigan 26-15, on Friday (12/12) in Alumni Arena. The Bulls (0-2) will now break for the holidays before resuming their season on the road at the Wilkes Open on Monday (12/29) and Tuesday (12/30). In other action, Central Michigan pounded Ithaca College 40-0.

The match against the Georgia State Panthers saw a see-saw battle that came down to the heavyweight bout. Trailing 12-9, freshman 177-pounder Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) scored a win-by-fall at 2:55 of the first period, giving the Bulls a 15-12 lead. The Panthers responded however, capturing a close 4-3 win at 190 pounds. Tied 15-15 entering sudden-death overtime, UB heavyweight Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) was called for stalling with :04 seconds remaining, giving Georgia State the win.

In the second match, the Bulls raced out to an early 6-0 lead behind wins by junior 118-pounder Brian Schaal (Attica, NY/Alexander) and freshman 126-pounder Chad Caros (Franklinville, NY/Suffern). Central Michigan roared back scoring wins-by-fall at both 134 and 142 pounds to take the lead for good at 12-6. Senior John Stutzman (Bear, DE/William Penn) won at 150 pounds in an overtime tie-breaker to bring the Bulls within three points, but the Chippewas got wins at 158, 167, 177 and 190 pounds before forfeiting heavyweight for a 26-15 win.
