CLEVELAND, OH - Rebecca Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) of the University at Buffalo volleyball team has been named to the 2002 Academic All-MAC Team as announced today by the league office. To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award, and outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. The members of the Academic All-MAC Team were voted on by the league's faculty athletics representatives.

Ashare, a middle hitter, recently completed her three-year career at UB with 415 kills, 136 digs and 159 blocks. She was a team captain this past season and was the Bulls' Most Improved Player in 2001 after leading the team with a .241 hitting percentage and recording 200 kills. Ashare was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball First Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), after being named to the second team in 2001. She carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average while majoring in psychology and plans to forgo her final year of playing eligibility in 2003 to concentrate on pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology.

Ashare is joined on the 2002 Academic All-MAC Team by Stephanie Keller (Ball State), Laura Twyman (Bowling Green), Jennifer Nighswander (Eastern Michigan), Camila Olaio (Eastern Michigan), Julie Ruff (Kent State), Tara Buroker (Miami), Michelle Gil (Ohio) and Heidi Neumeister (Toledo).
