Bulls Fall to Northern Illinois in MAC Tournament First Round

Buffalo ends season with 11-20 overall record

DEKALB, IL - The University at Buffalo's 2003 volleyball campaign ended tonight with a 3-0 loss at Northern Illinois in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, 30-27, 30-23, 30-23. The Bulls entered the match as the tournament's 11th seed, and they end the season with an 11-20 overall record. Northern Illinois, seeded sixth in the tournament, improves to 20-10 overall and advances to face Akron in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 21.

The Bulls were led by freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 11 kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Morzenti finished her freshman season with 331 kills (2.88 per game). Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) recorded 10 kills and 11 digs in the final match of her career, giving her 1,450 kills and 1,414 digs, both second on UB's all-time career lists. Matikosh's 408 kills on the season rank as the eighth-highest total for a single-season in school history. Sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished tonight's match with eight kills and two blocks, and freshman Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) added six kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) recorded 32 assists and 10 digs in the loss. Brown's 1,288 assists on the season and 2,236 career assists are both school records.

Northern Illinois was led by Megan Markowski (13 kills), Tera Lobdell (12 kills, 12 digs), Brooke Dodson (11 kills, 13 digs) and Kate McCullagh (10 kills, seven blocks).
