Bulls Fall to Ohio in Last Match of the Season, 3-1
Ohio freshman Katie Smith served for nine straight points in game one, helping the Bobcats (11-16 overall, 9-9 MAC) open up a 23-12 lead, and sophomore Laura Hageman's eighth kill of the opening game ended it in Ohio's favor, 30-21. A kill by Hageman tied game two at 13-13 before the Bulls began to outdistance themselves thanks to the play of sophomore Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and freshman Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster). Matikosh had four kills in game two and Schrantz had three, all late in the game, with her final one giving the Bulls a 30-21 win to even the match at one game apiece. The Bobcats dominated game three, winning 30-17, and outlasted the Bulls in game four, 30-24, to end the match. A service ace by senior Tara Harshbarger broke a 10-10 tie in the fourth game and the Bobcats never let go of the lead from that point on. Matikosh also finished the match with a double-double (10 kills, 10 digs), and Buffalo sophomore Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) added a team-high 13 kills and two blocks. Schrantz had nine kills, six digs, three assists and three blocks, and freshman Katie Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) finished with 13 digs, two kills and four service aces. The Bobcats were led by Smith (21 kills, nine digs, two blocks), Hageman (19 kills, nine digs, four blocks) and sophomore Lindsay Judice (12 kills, two digs, three blocks). The Bulls finish the 2001 season with a 5-23 overall record and an 0-18 mark in the
Mid-American Conference. |
