Ashare Named to Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Second Team

Sophomore is third on team in kills with 179 and second in blocks with 54

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) of the University at Buffalo volleyball team has been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Second Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

Ashare, a sophomore middle hitter, has appeared in 25 of the Bulls' 26 matches this season, starting 13, and she currently leads the team in hitting percentage (.241) while also ranking third on the squad in kills with 179 (2.39 per game) and second in blocks with 54 (0.72 per game). Ashare had a career high 16 kills against Kent State on November 9 and she has posted a career-high six blocks on three different occasions this season. Ashare is a UB Scholar Athlete, a member of the Mid-American Conference Academic Honor Roll, a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and a MAC Scholars Commissioner's Award recipient. A psychology major, she holds a 4.0 grade point average.

The Academic All-America program is in its 50th year and has recognized over 12,000 student-athletes at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his or her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The District I team is compiled from NCAA Division I teams from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Ashare and the Bulls (5-21 overall, 0-16 MAC) have just two matches remaining in the 2001 season. They play at Miami (OH) on Friday, November 16 at 7 pm and host Ohio on Sunday, November 18 at 2 pm.
