Volleyball Loses to Stony Brook, 3-2

Matikosh leads Bulls with 12 kills

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team battled the Stony Brook Seawolves to a five-game match but could not come away with the win, losing 10-15, 15-7, 16-14, 12-15, 5-15 at the USB Sports Complex. The loss was the Bulls' 18th in a row, and it drops their record to 4-27 overall. Stony Brook improves to 12-19 overall.

Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bulls with 12 kills, many coming at key times in the two games UB won. After the Seawolves closed an 8-3 UB lead in game two, making it 8-6, the Bulls scored the next six points and then won the game on a Matikosh kill. Stony Brook got out to the early 8-3 lead in game three but Buffalo rallied, scoring nine of the next 12 points to take a 12-11 lead. The Seawolves gained back the advantage and led 14-12, but the Bulls took control and scored the last four points of the game for a 16-14 win, aided by a kill and a service ace from Matikosh. The determined Seawolves, however, earned a 15-12 come-from-behind victory in game four and then put the match away with a 15-5 win in the fifth game.

Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) finished with 43 assists and a match-high 16 digs. Matikosh added 10 digs and three service aces, and junior Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) posted 11 digs, six kills and four service aces.

The Bulls have one more match remaining in the 2000 season. They host Bowling Green on Saturday, November 18 at 7 pm in Alumni Arena. The Falcons currently stand atop the MAC's East Division.
