BUFFALO, NY - Senior Rebecca Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) of the University at Buffalo volleyball team has been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball First Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Ashare was one of six players named to the first team, and she now advances to the national Academic All-America ballot. The national Verizon Academic All-America Volleyball Team will be announced on December 5.

Ashare was a Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Second Team selection in 2001, and she is a UB Scholar Athlete and a member of the Mid-American Conference Academic Honor Roll. Ashare holds a 4.0 grade point average at UB while majoring in psychology, and she plans to forgo her final year of playing eligibility in 2003 to concentrate on pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology.

Ashare, a middle hitter, has appeared in 22 of the Bulls' 29 matches on the season after missing the first seven matches with a back injury. She currently ranks sixth on the team in kills per game (1.32) and third in blocks per game (0.70). Ashare is a team captain and was the Bulls' Most Improved Player last season after leading the team with a .241 hitting percentage and recording 200 kills. Ashare currently has 392 kills and 155 blocks in her career.

The Academic All-America program was created in 1952 and has recognized over 12,000 student-athletes at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his or her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The District I team is compiled from NCAA Division I teams from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Ashare and the Bulls (9-20, 1-14 MAC) have just three matches remaining in the 2002 season. They play at Bowling Green on Friday, November 15 at 6 pm and host Ohio on Friday, November 22 and Miami (OH) on Saturday, November 23, both at 5 pm.
