Bulls End Regular Season With Loss at Bowling Green

Buffalo to face Western Michigan in first round of MAC Tournament on Tuesday

BOWLING GREEN, OH - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team needed a win tonight to clinch a home first-round Mid-American Conference Tournament match, and it pulled out a 30-24, 30-24, 30-23 sweep of the Bulls in front of 263 fans in Anderson Arena. The Falcons finish the regular season with a 16-13 overall record and an 8-8 MAC mark while the Bulls finish 8-21 overall and 1-15 in the MAC.

BGSU used a balanced offensive attack, hitting .312 as a team and getting at least five kills from six different players in the win. Melissa Mohr led the way with 12 kills, with Taylor Twite and Maggie Karges also reaching double figures with 10 apiece.

The Bulls hurt themselves in game one, committing eight errors in a span of 11 points after the game was tied at 11-11, giving Bowling Green a 19-14 lead that it held on to for a 30-24 win. The Falcons’ run continued in game two as they opened up a 10-2 lead en route to another 30-24 victory. BGSU had 18 kills and hit .333 in game three, ending the match with a 30-23 win.

The Bulls were led by sophomore Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 12 kills and five digs and senior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) with eight kills and 10 digs. Junior setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) recorded 31 assists and 10 digs, and freshman Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a team-high 13 digs.

The Bulls, the 13th seed in the MAC Tournament, will travel to No. 4 Western Michigan on Tuesday, November 16 for a 7 pm first-round match. The Broncos (17-10 overall, 11-5 MAC) defeated the Bulls in four games (30-17, 26-30, 30-22, 30-22) in the MAC opener for both teams and the only meeting of the regular season between the two squads back on September 24 in Kalamazoo, MI. Buffalo is 0-1 in its MAC Tournament history, losing 3-0 as the 11th seed at No. 6 Northern Illinois in the first round in 2003.
