BULLS DROP THREE MATCHES

The Bulls' volleyball team lost matches against Syracuse, Akron and Marshall last week, dropping its record to 4-26 overall and 0-17 in the Mid-American Conference. On Wednesday, November 8, the Bulls battled back after losing the first two games of a non-conference contest with Syracuse, but they could not pull out a win in the fifth and final game, losing the match 4-15, 11-15, 15-9, 15-9, 12-15. Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) finished with a team-high 14 kills, six digs and four blocks, while freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) added 10 kills, 15 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) recorded a match-high 18 digs, 46 assists, four service aces and three kills.

On Friday, November 10, Buffalo lost a four-game match to the visiting Akron Zips, 12-15, 15-9, 10-15, 7-15. Shiels posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs, and LaCour finished the night with a match and career-high 23 digs to go along with 33 assists.

The next night, the Bulls were shut out by Marshall, 11-15, 11-15, 1-15. Shiels and Matikosh both finished with a team-high 11 kills apiece, and Shiels also added a team-high nine digs. Junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Fall, IA/Kirkwood Community College) contributed nine kills for the second straight night, and LaCour added 24 assists, four kills and six digs. Junior Jessica Redding (Andover, MA/Eastern Connecticut State) added a career-high 13 assists.

SHIELS INCHES HER WAY UP ON CAREER LISTS

Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) moved into sixth-place all-time in career attack attempts with 39 versus Akron on Friday. Following the Bulls' match against Marshall, Shiels has 2,637 career attack attempts, including an even 800 this season. Shiels also posted 11 kills against Marshall, giving her 270 for the season and 915 for her career, pushing her past both Laurie Bulger (1988-92, 907 career kills) and Candi Sims (1993-96, 911 career kills). Her career mark is now the sixth-highest career total in school history. Shiels also has 840 career digs, 45 away from breaking into the top 10 all-time at UB. Amy Burda (1995-98) currently holds the 10th spot with 885 career digs.

LACOUR ADDS NAME TO SINGLE-SEASON ASSISTS CHART

Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) etched her name in the UB single-season record book with her 46-assist performance against Syracuse on Wednesday. With 33 assists against Akron on Friday and 24 against Marshall on Saturday, LaCour now has 971 assists this season, tying her with Mary Tocke (1990) for the sixth-highest single-season total at UB. LaCour also stands in sixth place all-time with 1,303 career assists.

THE UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The Bulls have two more matches remaining in the 2000 season. Buffalo travels to Stony Brook for a 7 pm match on Wednesday, November 15 before returning home to close out the season on Saturday, November 18 at 7 pm against Bowling Green.
