Bulls Fall To Broncos

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo volleyball team embarked on its final road swing of the 2006 regular season Friday night and fell to the host Western Michigan Broncos, 3-0, at the University Arena. The loss drops UB to 14-18 on the season and 3-12 in conference play. The Bulls have just one regular season match remaining before the MAC Tournament begins on Tuesday night.

WMU was able to defeat Buffalo, 30-24, 30-21, 30-24 as it outhit the Bulls .280 to .149 in the contest. The Broncos hit higher than UB in each game, including a .486 in game two. Sophomore Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill/Rutgers) led UB with 14 kills on 25 swings and just three errors as she also led the team with a .440 hitting efficiency. Neba finished with two solo blocks on the evening, which was tops in the match. The sophomore right side was the only player for Buffalo to reach double figures in kills as nobody else had more than six. Fellow sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) was one of those players as she had six kills on 16 swings with just one error for an efficiency of .312 on the night. Fitchette had three total blocks with two block assists and one of the solo variety.

Junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) led UB with 10 digs as she was the only Bull to reach double figures in that department. Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) had 33 assists on the night, while she also added three kills and one block assist.

WMU (17-12, 7-8 MAC) was led by Kathryn Babcock who had a match-high 18 kills as she hit a .517 on the night. Caitlin Strimel recorded 17 digs and a match-high five service aces, while Jenifer Sulewski ran the Bronco offense with 38 assists.

The Bulls wrap up the regular season Saturday night when they travel to Northern Illinois to face the Huskies. Much is still to be decided in the MAC standings and for Buffalo to see who its first round opponent will be in the conference tournament. As for Northern Illinois, it has already clinched the MAC West title. The match is set to begin at 8:00 pm ET.
