BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team scored a 30-27 win in game one before dropping three straight games to the visiting Akron Zips, 30-28, 30-22, 30-24, in a Mid-American Conference match-up at Alumni Arena. Buffalo sophomore Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bulls with 10 kills and a match-high 21 digs, just one less than her career high. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 5-21 on the year, 0-16 in the MAC. Akron improves to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in the MAC. The Zips entered the game ranked 10th in the NCAA's Mideast Region and in a tie with Bowling Green for first place in the MAC's East Division.

After a service error by Akron's Lyndsay Sopko broke a 7-7 tie, the Bulls never trailed in game one. Senior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) had seven of her team-high 13 kills on the night in game one, and a service ace by sophomore Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) gave Buffalo a 30-27 win. The Bulls led late in game two as well, 28-26, but a kill by Katie Kuzior, two attack errors by Matikosh and a kill by Monica Morlock ended the game at 30-28 in the Zips' favor. Akron dominated game three and then pulled out a 30-24 win in game four to end the match.

Ashare had 12 kills and six blocks, tying her career high, and senior Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) also tied her career high with seven blocks on the night. Senior setter Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) finished with 40 assists, six digs and three blocks and freshman Katie Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) added 13 digs and two service aces.

The Bulls have just two matches remaining in their 2001 season. They travel to Oxford, OH to face Miami on Friday, November 16 at 7 pm and then host Ohio on Sunday, November 18 at 2 pm.
