Syracuse Pulls Out 3-2 Win Over UB Volleyball

Orangewomen win 15-12 in fifth game

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team battled back after losing the first two games to the visiting Syracuse Orangewomen, but the Bulls could not pull out a win in the fifth and final game, dropping their record to 4-24 overall. With the win, Syracuse improves to 24-9 overall.

The Orangewomen seemed in control of the match after taking the opening two games by 15-4 and 15-11 scores, but the Bulls came back to tie the match at two games apiece with identical 15-9 wins in games three and four. Leading 10-6 in game three with freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) serving, the Bulls posted three straight kills, by juniors Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood CC), Amelia Liddle (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) and Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), to go up 14-6, and a solo block by freshman Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) after three straight Syracuse points gave Buffalo the 15-9 win. In game four, Buffalo broke an 8-8 tie by outscoring the Orange 7-1 for the 15-9 victory that forced a fifth game. A kill by Matikosh gave Buffalo a 7-6 lead in the final game, but Syracuse slowly pulled away as a result of a combination of kills and UB errors, and the Orangewomen took the game and the match with a 15-12 win.

Shiels finished with a team-high 14 kills, six digs and four blocks, while Matikosh added 10 kills, 15 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) recorded a match-high 18 digs, 46 assists, four service aces and three kills.

The Bulls return to Mid-American Conference action this weekend, hosting Akron on Friday, November 10 and Marshall on Saturday, November 11. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
