Volleyball Falls to MAC-Leader Ohio

Nikki Morzenti's 14 kills lead the Bulls in a 3-0 loss to the undefeated Bobcats

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team didn't fare any better than any other Mid-American Conference team this season in tonight's match against the visiting Ohio Bobcats. The Bobcats earned a 30-27, 30-17, 30-24 win over the Bulls to remain undefeated in league play (13-0) and stretch their overall winning streak to 21 matches. With the win, Ohio (23-3 overall) clinched the MAC's regular season championship title.

The Bobcats entered the match ranked 29th in the nation in Division I, receiving 38 votes in the most recent USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll, released on Monday, November 3. The Bulls (10-17 overall, 4-9 MAC) were led by freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 14 kills and eight digs and senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with 10 kills and 11 digs.

The Bulls chipped away at an early six-point deficit, 9-3, in game one to tie the score at 20-20 on a kill by Morzenti and take a 21-20 lead on a kill by junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster). The teams then went back and forth until Ohio broke a 27-27 tie with two straight kills and a block that ended the game at 30-27. The Bobcats easily won game two, 30-17, but the Bulls rebounded in game three and played Ohio to ties at 10-10, 13-13 and 18-18. The Bobcats broke things open late and got out to a four-point lead, 26-22, en route to the 30-24 win to end the match.

Sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished with seven kills and four blocks for the Bulls, and Schrantz had six kills and five digs in the match. Ohio was led by Lindsay Judice and Holly Schetzsle with 16 kills apiece and Julia Winkfield with 13 kills. The Bulls held last year's MAC Player of the Year, Laura Hageman, to just nine kills on 27 attacks.

The Bulls are on the road for their final three matches of the regular season, beginning with a 6 pm match at Kent State on Sunday, November 9. Next weekend, Buffalo travels to Marshall for a 7 pm match on Friday, November 14 and to Ohio on Saturday, November 15 for a rematch with the Bobcats at 7 pm.
