In non-conference action on Wednesday, November 1, the Cornell Big Red battled for 15-9, 15-8 and 15-11 wins in three straight games to defeat the Bulls, who were led by junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with a team-high 14 kills and freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with 13 kills. Freshman Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) added five kills and a career-high eight digs in her fifth career start. On Saturday, November 4, Buffalo battled Ohio, the top team in the MAC's East Division, in four games but could not come away with a win, losing 8-15, 15-13, 13-15, 3-15. Shiels (15 kills, 21 digs) and Matikosh (14 kills, 18 digs) both recorded double-doubles to lead the Bulls. SHIELS MOVES UP ON CAREER CHARTS
Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) passed the 800-career digs plateau with her match-high 21 digs against Ohio. Shiels entered the year with 629 and she has 182 so far this season, giving her 811 career digs. Shiels is still 74 digs away from breaking into the top 10 all-time at UB, a spot currently held by Amy Burda (1995-98) with 885 career digs. She would have to average 14.8 digs in the Bulls' remaining five matches to reach Burda's total. Shiels also moved herself into seventh place all-time in career attack attempts over the weekend with 2,521, including a team-high 684 this season. Shiels is also slowly moving herself up UB's career kills list. She is currently ninth all-time with 879 career kills, just 10 away from tying Barb Shiesley (1983-86) for eighth place with 889.
MATIKOSH CONTINUES PRODUCTIVITY
Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) was a bright spot for the Bulls last week, continuing her productive rookie campaign. Matikosh recorded double-digits in kills in all three of UB's matches. She had 13 kills and six digs against Cornell, 14 kills and 18 digs against Ohio and 14 kills and eight digs against Miami.
