Bulls Fall Short Against Toledo, 3-1

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team returned home for the first time in three weeks, but was unable to come away with a win as the Bulls fell 3-1 to Toledo, Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls have just two regular season matches left this season and both will be at Alumni Arena.

Toledo took the match 30-19, 31-29, 26-30, 30-22 as it outhit Buffalo .207 to .097. Sophomore Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) led the way for UB with 13 kills and just one error on 24 swings. Lueders had a well rounded match as she also recorded three service aces and three total blocks, including one solo. Junior Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill/Rutgers) had 11 kills and six total blocks, while sophomore Maria Mezzadri (Livonia, MI/Livonia Stevenson) added nine kills. Freshman Lindsey Schlegel (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had 41 assists and seven digs on the night.

Defensively, the Bulls had 10.0 total team blocks, including six block assists from freshman Kristin Bignell (Drayton, Ontario/Norwell District). Senior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 20 digs and freshman Richelle Bigelow (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) had 13 digs. Senior Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and freshman Jenna Gabello (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) each had seven digs and recorded two and one services aces, respectively.

Toledo was led by 16 kills from Sarah Kreher and 13 digs from TaNeisha Winters. Mallory Ladd had 44 assists and Katie Westerfeld had eight of Toledo’s 17 service aces.

The Bulls will wrap up the regular season this upcoming weekend with two matches at Alumni Arena. UB will host Bowling Green on Friday with the match set to begin at 6:30 pm. Following the match with the Falcons, Alumni Arena will host the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Preview to the Final Four. UC-Irvine and IPFW, last year’s NCAA Championship match, will square off at 8:30 pm.
