Herd Thunders Back For Volleyball WinBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team won the first two games by scores of 32-30 and 30-24, and the Bulls appeared to be on their way to their first conference victory of the season before the Marshall Thundering Herd made a courageous comeback to win the match in five games. Marshall took games three and four by scores of 30-20 and 30-27 before ending the match with a 15-12 victory in the deciding fifth game. The Bulls were led by sophomore Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with 16 kills, 17 digs and four blocks and sophomore Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) with 15 kills (which ties her career high), five blocks and two service aces.
After Buffalo victories in games one and two, the momentum in the match shifted in the third game when the Thundering Herd strung together a 13-4 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead, and four straight kills - by Isabell Anderer, Grace Jones, Heidi Kuethe and Tracey King - gave them a 30-20 win. An attack error by Anderer tied the score at 18-18 in game four before the Herd pulled away and sealed the 30-27 win after an attack error by Buffalo's Ashare. Marshall held the advantage for the entire fifth game, although the Bulls did stay alive thanks to an attack error by Marshall's King and a kill by freshman Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) that made the score 14-12. The game and the match ended, however, on an attack error by Buffalo freshman Katie Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors). Sophomore Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) finished the match with a career-high nine blocks, seven kills and six digs, and senior Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) added 14 digs, three blocks, three service aces and four kills. Marshall was led by Anderer with 24 kills, 18 digs and four blocks and King with 18 kills and three blocks. As a team, the Bulls held a slight advantage with 16 team blocks compared to Marshall's 14. The Bulls (5-19 overall, 0-14 Mid-American Conference) host Kent State on Friday, November
9 and Akron on Saturday, November 10 at Alumni Arena. Both matches are set to begin at 7 pm. |
