Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision at Marshall

Sophomore Nikki Morzenti has a team-high 17 kills in the four-game loss

HUNTINGTON, WV - The University at Buffalo volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd for the second time this season, this time in front of 410 fans at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, WV. Game scores were 30-23, 30-26, 25-30 and 30-20. Marshall, ranked 13th in the Mideast Region, improved to 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the Mid-American Conference while Buffalo fell to 7-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.

Marshall took a quick 10-4 lead in game one, but the Bulls battled back to within one on two occasions, 18-17 and 20-19. The Herd, however, used five kills from five different players and capitalized on Buffalo errors to close out the game with a 30-23 win. In game two, Buffalo led by as many as six points, 12-6, early on before Marshall came from behind to take a 30-26 win, led by seven kills from freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy.

Buffalo took a close game three that was tied at 18-18 before sophomore Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) had back-to-back kills that put the Bulls ahead for good and closed the gap in the match to 2-1. Marshall then came out firing in game four, hitting .457 and using an 8-1 run to end the game at 30-20 and the match at 3-1.

The Bulls, who had not had a player reach double figures in kills in each of their last three matches, had three players reach double digits led by Morzenti with 17 kills. Senior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) added 14 kills and seven digs, and junior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished with 11 kills and a match-high eight blocks, including three solos. Freshman libero Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a team-high 13 digs, and junior setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) recorded 42 assists.

Marshall was paced by four players with double digits in kills. Billingy led the way with 24 while Christin Bimberg had 11 and Stephanie Cahill and Amber Sims had 10 apiece. Katie Stein had 54 assists, 11 digs and six kills. Marshall hit .253 as a team in the match while the Bulls hit .184.

Buffalo now returns home for its final two home matches of the season. The Bulls host Toledo on Thursday, November 4 and Miami (OH) on Friday, November 5. Both matches are at 7 pm.
