Volleyball Earns 3-1 Road Win at CMU

Five players reach double digits in kills in four-game win over Chippewas

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - Led by five players in double digits in kills and four players with double-doubles, the University at Buffalo volleyball team fought its way to a 3-1 Mid-American Conference road win at Central Michigan Saturday night, 30-25, 30-24, 29-31, 30-23. The win, Buffalo's first road MAC win since a 3-0 victory at Marshall on November 14, 2003, moves UB to 10-16 overall and 2-10 in the conference. Central Michigan fell to 3-19 overall and 0-12 in the MAC.

The Chippewas jumped out to a 5-2 lead in game one, but the Bulls came back to tie the score at 6-6. The game was tied four more times after that before Buffalo gradually pulled away to go up by as many as five points, 23-18. CMU battled back to get within one, 26-25, but a kill by junior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) followed by two Central Michigan attack errors and a kill by senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) gave the Bulls the 30-25 win. Weekley led the Bulls with six kills while Mapé added five kills in the game.

Game two started out back and forth before the Chippewas put together an 8-3 run to go up by five, 18-13. The Bulls then turned the momentum around with a 9-2 run, led by three kills from junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat), to go up 22-20. A service ace by Mapé later ended the game in UB's favor, 30-24.

Buffalo led for the majority of game three, but the Chippewas kept hanging around and took a late 27-26 lead thanks to a Buffalo attack error. The Bulls committed two more attack errors over the final four points of the game to help the Chippewas steal the 31-29 win to keep the match going.

The Bulls took an early 8-2 lead in game four, but Central Michigan again would not back down and came back to take a 15-13 lead midway through the game. Buffalo then embarked on a 7-1 run that would prove to be the difference, putting them up 20-16. A later 5-1 UB run gave the Bulls an even greater cushion en route to the 30-23 win that snapped their three-match losing streak.

Clark finished with a career-high 15 kills, 11 digs and six blocks, while Mapé added 14 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) finished with 14 kills and 11 digs, and senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) also posted a double-double with 58 assists, 13 digs, three kills and four blocks. Junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) added 12 kills and a match-high seven blocks, and Weekley finished with 12 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) chipped in with 18 digs.

The Chippewas were led by Alison Baker (13 kills, five blocks), Mary Ochmanek (12 kills, eight digs, four blocks) and Kate Fissel (10 kills).

The Bulls now return home for their final four matches of the regular season, beginning with Toledo on Thursday, November 3 at 7 pm in Alumni Arena. The match will be broadcast live on WLVL 1340 AM.
