Bulls Fall Short Against Akron

Zips fight back for 3-2 win

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team fell just short of its second straight 3-2 win tonight in Alumni Arena, instead falling in five games to the visiting Akron Zips, a team that had shut the Bulls out earlier in the season in Akron on October 17. Game scores tonight were 30-25, 26-30, 28-30, 30-28 and 15-7. With the win, the Zips extended their winning streak to six matches and improved to 12-10 overall and 7-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls fell to 9-15 overall and 3-7 in the MAC. Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bulls' attack with 21 kills and 19 digs.

Akron led game one by as many as seven points, 15-8, but the Bulls battled back to tie the score at 23-23 on a Zips' attack error.

Akron went on a 4-0 run after that, however, to go back on top en route to taking game one by a 30-25 score. Buffalo went ahead 2-1 in the match with 30-26 and 30-28 wins in games two and three. The Bulls jumped out to a 13-5 lead in game two and never let the Zips get closer than three points. Two kills by senior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) and an attack error by Akron's Monica Morlock ended the game in the Bulls' favor. The Zips led game three 17-12 and 20-14, but Buffalo gradually climbed back in it and tied the score at 24-24 on an unassisted kill by sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne). A block by Bouie, freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) and junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) later gave the Bulls a 30-28 win to end the game.

Game four was tied 5-5 before the Zips embarked on an 11-4 run to go ahead 16-9. A 5-0 UB run got Buffalo within two, 16-14, and consecutive kills by Matikosh later tied the score at 21-21. A kill by freshman Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) gave Buffalo a 24-23 lead, but Akron came back to tie the score at 27-27 and 28-28. An ace by Akron's Lyndsay Schmiedel and a kill by Sandy Lewis then forced a deciding fifth game, which the Zips easily won by a 15-7 score to earn the 3-2 victory in the match.

Schrantz finished with 17 kills and 12 digs for the Bulls, and Weekley added 14 kills and a team-high seven blocks. Bouie recorded 13 kills and four blocks in the match, and sophomore setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished the night with 62 assists and 15 digs. The Bulls posted 14.5 team blocks compared to 24.0 team blocks for the Zips. Morlock had a match-high 11 blocks for Akron, and Lewis finished with 26 kills, 21 digs and seven blocks.

Tonight's match concluded a four-match homestand for the Bulls. Buffalo will now take to the road for weekend matches at Central Michigan on Friday, October 31 at 7 pm and at Northern Illinois on Saturday, November 1 at 7 pm.
