Bulls Fall Despite Outhitting EMU

Five Bulls record double-digit kills

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team dropped its fifth straight match on Friday night, falling to Eastern Michigan, 3-1, at Alumni Arena. The loss drops UB to 13-15 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.

UB played a tough match, but fell to the Eagles, who won their third straight match, this time by a score of 30-24, 27-30, 30-28, 30-26. Buffalo even out-hit its opponent .214 to .212, including a match-high .356 in the second game, which Buffalo emerged victorious in. The Bulls were led by senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) who finished with a team high 19 kills, while recording 14 digs. Fellow senior, Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) also notched a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) finished the night with a match-best .375 hitting percentage, recording 10 kills on 24 swings, with just one error. Fitchette also led UB to eight team blocks with three block assists and two of the solo variety.

The Bulls had three additional players record double digits in digs as junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beevercreak) recorded a team-high 23 digs, while senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) added 14 digs and freshman Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) had 11. Clark finished with 51 assists on the evening.

The Bulls, who were second in the MAC in service aces, added nine more to their total, led by four from Mapé. Clark and junior Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) each had two, while Fensten added one.

Eastern Michigan (9-14, 3-8 MAC) was led by a match-high 22 kills from Lindsay Piccolini and 27 digs from Ashley Cudney. Kate Sulewski notched a double-double for the Eagles with 60 assists and 10 digs.

The Bulls play their final home match of 2006 tomorrow night against Central Michigan. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm and prior to the start, UB will recognize its three seniors.
