Volleyball Fights Back For 3-2 Win Over Kent State

Senior Lindsay Matikosh leads Bulls with 22 kills and five blocks

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team snapped its three-match losing streak in come-from-behind fashion, earning a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting Kent State tonight in Alumni Arena. The Bulls took games one and two by scores of 30-24 and 30-27, but the Golden Flashes tied the match with 31-29 and 30-24 wins in games three and four. Kent State looked in control of the match with a 9-5 lead in the deciding fifth game, but the Bulls mounted a comeback with a 10-1 run to end the game and the match with a 15-10 win. The win moves Buffalo's record to 9-14 overall and 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference. Kent State drops to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the MAC.

Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Buffalo comeback in game five, playing a part in seven of the Bulls' final 10 points with three kills, three block assists and one setter assist. Matikosh and freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) both posted a team-high 22 kills in the match, with Matikosh adding five blocks and Morzenti adding 12 digs. Morzenti's 22 kills were a career high.

The Bulls got four of their final 10 points in game five on blocks, including three in a row that tied the game at 9-9 and put them ahead 10-9 and 11-9.

Senior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) posted a match-high seven blocks, and sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) posted six blocks along with 13 kills, eight in game one alone, and a career-high eight digs. Sophomore setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished with 53 assists, 15 digs and four blocks, and junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) added seven kills and 11 digs.

The Golden Flashes were led by Danielle Holt with 27 kills and 15 digs and Michelle Corniffe with 14 kills.

The Bulls are home again on Wednesday, October 29 when they host Akron at 7 pm in Alumni Arena to conclude their four-match homestand. They then travel to Central Michigan for a 7 pm match on Friday, October 31 and to Northern Illinois for a 7 pm match on Saturday, November 1.
