Bulls Drop Three-Game Match at Miami

Weekley and Burd notch nine kills apiece to lead Buffalo

OXFORD, OH - The Miami RedHawks had three players reach double digits in kills to lead them to a 3-0 win over the visiting University at Buffalo volleyball team Saturday night in Oxford, OH. Game scores were 30-24, 31-29 and 30-20.

The RedHawks (14-7 overall, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) pulled away in game one thanks to a 6-1 run that put them up 19-13. The Bulls closed the gap to three, 21-18, but Miami regained its six-point advantage and held on for the 30-24 win.

For the second night in a row, the Bulls rebounded with a strong game two, only to see the RedHawks earn a 31-29 extra-point win. Miami jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but Buffalo charged back to take a 16-13 lead, led by three kills from junior Jenna Mape (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) and two from junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat). The RedHawks regained the lead, 19-18, thanks to a 6-2 run and then won the game on a kill by Emily Schroeder and two Buffalo attack errors.

Miami then jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game three and dominated throughout, ending the match with a 30-20 win for the shutout. Schroeder finished with a match-high 15 kills to lead the RedHawks, while Jeanna Staun and Kate Norris added 11 kills apiece. Libero Suzy Wolford had a match-high 20 digs.

The Bulls were led by senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) (nine kills, five blocks) and junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) (nine kills, six blocks). Mape finished with six kills, nine digs and three blocks, while Clark added seven kills, five digs and three blocks. Sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a team-high 14 digs and senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) recorded 35 assists, seven digs and four blocks. The Bulls had 11.5 blocks in the match compared to just six by Miami.

Buffalo (9-15 overall, 1-9 MAC) is next at Eastern Michigan on Friday, October 28 at 7 pm.
