The University at Buffalo volleyball team powered its way to its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season Saturday night, 3-1 over visiting Kent State (30-21, 27-30, 30-19, 30-20). Four players reached double digits in kills and three players had double-doubles in the win, which snapped a four-match losing streak for the Bulls. Senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) led Buffalo with match highs of 14 kills and 11 blocks, while junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) finished with 12 kills, 14 digs and six blocks. Juniors Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) and Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) also reached double digits in kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) posted a double-double with 46 assists, 10 digs and three blocks, and sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 20 digs. Bulls Fall to Nationally-Ranked Ohio Prior to Saturday's win over Kent State, the Bulls hosted nationally-ranked Ohio on Friday night in Alumni Arena. The Bobcats proved why they are ranked 23rd in the country with a decisive three-game shutout of the Bulls (30-20, 30-11, 30-19). Morzenti led Buffalo with nine kills in the match, while Clark had a team-high 15 digs. Brown finished with 25 assists and six digs, and sophomore Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker) added six kills and five digs.
The Bulls finished the non-conference portion of the 2005 schedule earlier in the week with a 3-0 loss at Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon (36-34, 30-19, 30-27). Burd finished with a team-high 10 kills and seven blocks, and Clark had 11 digs and 11 blocks to lead the Bulls' efforts. Clark's 11 blocks were a career high and also set the school record for block assists in a three-game match, breaking the previous school record of 10 set by Sasha Courbat at Canisius on September 27, 2000. Six of Clark's blocks came in an emotional game one, helping the Bulls battled back from a 12-2 deficit to take a 28-26 lead before eventually falling to the Orange by a 36-34 score.
More career milestones were reached during Buffalo's three matches last week. Brown posted her 900th career dig against Ohio on Friday, and Weekley recorded her 900th career kill against Kent State on Saturday. Brown now has 912 career digs and Weekley has 908 career kills. Up Next
