BUFFALO, NY - Four players reached double digits in kills and three players posted double-doubles to lead the University at Buffalo volleyball team to its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season Saturday night in Alumni Arena. The Bulls powered their way to a 3-1 win (30-21, 27-30, 30-19, 30-20) over visiting Kent State to up their record to 9-13 overall and 1-7 in the MAC. With game one tied 10-10, the Bulls embarked on an 8-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back blocks by senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) and junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat), to take control. Weekley had four of her match-high 11 blocks in game one, while Clark had four kills and three blocks. Junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) led the Bulls' offense in game one with five kills.

The Golden Flashes responded by jumping out to a 5-1 lead to open game two. They led by as many as six points before a 4-0 Buffalo run cut the Bulls' deficit to one, 21-20. That was as close as they would get, however, as Kent State gradually pulled away to go up by four before ending the game at 30-27 on a kill by Danielle Holt. Holt had six kills in the game to pace the Golden Flashes, while Weekley had six kills and two blocks for the Bulls.

Weekley again led the Bulls in game three with three kills, four blocks and two service aces. Her service aces were back-to-back to give the Bulls an early 8-4 lead and a large enough cushion for the remainder of the game that ended in an 11-point Buffalo victory. The Bulls dominated game four also, leading by as many as 13 points en route to the 30-20 final. Back-to-back blocks by Burd and senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) started a 7-0 UB run that put the Bulls up 15-5 midway through game four, putting the match out of the Golden Flashes' reach.

Weekley finished with match highs of 14 kills and 11 blocks, while Clark finished with 12 kills, 14 digs and six blocks. Burd and junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) also reached double digits in kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Brown posted a double-double with 46 assists, 10 digs and three blocks, and sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 20 digs. The Bulls outhit the Golden Flashes .189 to .049 and they had 15 blocks compared to KSU's eight.

The Golden Flashes were led by Holt's 13 kills, while Ashley Feutz posted 11 kills and four blocks. Sarah Wilber added 10 kills and Laura Jensen had a team-high 16 digs. Anne Butts finished with 40 assists and 10 digs.

The Bulls are on the road for their next four matches, beginning next weekend at Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 pm and at Miami (OH) on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 pm.
