BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team put a vigorous fight in game three of its Mid-American Conference match with Northern Illinois, but was unable to take a victory, falling to the Huskies, 3-0, Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The match concluded the UB volleyball team’s alumni weekend where past UB players came to see the team play and spent time with the players and coaching staff.

Northern Illinois took the match 30-16, 30-21, 30-26 as the Huskies hit .313 for the match, compared to a .148 hitting percentage for the Bulls. Sophomore Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) led the way for the UB hitters as she recorded nine kills on 22 swings with just one error on the evening. Junior Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill/Rutgers) also recorded nine kills for the Bulls. Freshman Lindsey Schlegel (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) picked up a double-double as she had 33 assists and 11 digs, while also adding three kills and two block assists.

In addition to Schlegel, the UB defense was anchored by senior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) who had a match-high 13 digs. The Bulls also managed eight total team blocks with Neba and freshman Kristin Bignell (Drayton, Ontario/Norwell District) each recording five block assists. Lueders chipped in with three block assists of her own.

UB made quite a charge in the third game as they led for most of the game, including a 25-20 advantage. However, the Huskies took a 10-1 run there to end the match. In that third game, senior Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) recorded three service aces as she anchored a 7-0 UB run.

Northern Illinois was led by 18 kills from Irene Johnson and 12 digs from Maddie Hughes. Mandi Caputo added 39 assists for the Huskies.

The Bulls now embark on their final road trip of the 2007 regular season, hitting the road for the next five matches before wrapping up the season at Alumni Arena. The Bulls will be at Eastern Michigan this upcoming Friday for a 7:00 pm match with the Eagles.
