BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo redshirt junior Kelsey Lueders has been named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced this morning. The award is the first of Lueders’ career and the second for a UB player this season.

Lueders had a career day against Akron on Thursday night as the Bulls defeated the Zips in a five-set thriller. Lueders helped pace a blocking corps that recorded 20.5 total team blocks. Lueders alone had a career-best 11 total blocks, including four solo blocks. Lueders also had two digs, two service aces and seven kills in the win against the Zips. Lueders had another three blocks at Ball State on Saturday night, including a solo as she recorded half of her solo blocks on the season during this past weekend alone.

“This award is a credit to all the hard work that Kelsey has put in not just this past weekend, but all season,” said head coach Todd Kress. “She has really done a great job focusing on her net play and her defense has helped the entire team.”

Lueders is currently third on the team in kills with 131 and second on the team in blocking with 56 total blocks. Lueders also has eight service aces on the season.

The Bulls are back in action this weekend as they host Northern Illinois on Friday night and Western Michigan on Saturday night. Both matches begin at 7:00 pm.
