Bulls Fall Short Against Miami, 3-0

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team kept clawing back in its matchup with the defending conference champion, but in the end Miami defeated UB, 3-0, Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls staged large comebacks in two of the three sets, but were unable to pull all the way even in either match.

Miami won the contest, 25-21, 25-11, 25-22 as the RedHawks hit .261 opposed to just .036 for the Bulls. UB staged its first potential comeback in the first set as the Bulls were down 19-8 before pulling as close as 23-20, forcing the RedHawks to call their second timeout. UB would get to within three again at 24-21, but Miami took the match at 25-21.

After a second set that belonged all to Miami, the Bulls again tried to make the comeback in set three. In that set, Miami was up by as much as 20-11, but UB pulled to within two at 24-22. During that run, the Bulls used solid serving from Ellen Robertson and Maria Mezzadri as both recorded a service ace during the run. Miami again used a timeout to try and end the Buffalo run and it worked as a RedHawk kills thwarted the UB comeback and won the match for Miami.

The Bulls were led by seven kills from Marisa Hornbaker and six kills from Mezzadri. Sophomore Lindsey Schlegel had a double-double with 20 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Junior Lauren Fensten also finished in double figures in digs with 10.

Miami was led by 11 kills from Megan Griffin and 10 kills from Hallie Hanks. Melissa Zenz had 17 digs, while Andrea Atteberry added 29 assists.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow night as they host Bowling Green. The match against the Falcons is set for 7:00 pm.
