UB Volleyball Captures First MAC Win

Shiels leads Bulls in conference win over Northern Illinois in five games

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team made history tonight capturing its first Mid-American Conference win since joining the conference in 1998. The Bulls picked up the victory with a five game win over defending West Division Champion Northern Illinois (3-6, 0-2), with scores of 5-15, 15-12, 15-10, 12-15, 15-10.

The Huskies started the match strong winning game one convincingly, 15-5 but Buffalo quickly built some confidence taking games two and three, 15-12, 15-10. Game four went to the Huskies, 15-12 but Buffalo once again battled back and claimed game five, 15-10 and the match, 3-2.

Sophomore outside hitter Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) lead the Bulls in the match with 19 kills and 26 digs while senior outside hitter Rebecca Meade (Selden, NY/Selden) tallied 15 kills and 19 digs in the victory. Senior setter Somer Deschambault (Midland, Ontario/St. Theresa's) was also strong with 47 assists and 13 digs and sophomore middle hitter Amelia Liddle (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) was a force on defense for the Bulls with eight block assists and 10 digs.

Mandy Swick guided the Huskies with 18 kills and eight digs while setter Ali Frasor dished out 53 assists.

Buffalo moves to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference with tonight's win.

The Bulls return to action tommorrow against Western Michigan at 3:00 pm in Alumni Arena.
