BUFFALO, NY - Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) had 47 assists to become the school's all-time career assists leader, but the University at Buffalo volleyball team fell to the visiting Miami RedHawks tonight by a 3-1 score (30-28, 25-30, 30-26, 30-19) in front of 317 fans in Alumni Arena. The RedHawks improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference with their third straight win while the Bulls fell to 8-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

The RedHawks broke a 23-23 tie in game one with a 6-2 run that gave them a 29-25 lead. Back-to-back UB kills and a Miami attack error put the Bulls within one, 29-28, but a Buffalo attack error then gave Miami the winning point to end the game. The Bulls never trailed in game two and led by as many as eight points, 28-20, before holding on for the 30-25 win to tie the match at one game apiece.

After the RedHawks jumped out to an 18-11 lead in game three, the Bulls charged back with a 6-0 run to get within one, 18-17. The run included kills by junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater), junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) and sophomore Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker) and three Miami attack errors. The RedHawks, however, then went on a 5-0 run of their own to regain control of the game. The Bulls got within one two more times, 26-25 and 27-26, but kills by Kristen Walters and Carli Reihman and a Buffalo attack error gave Miami the 30-26 win. The RedHawks then jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in game four and led by as many as 12 points en route to the 30-19 win, putting an end to the Bulls' hopes for a comeback.

Morzenti finished with 17 kills, nine digs and five blocks to lead the Bulls, while Burd added 12 kills and six blocks. Senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) added nine kills and a match-high eight blocks, and junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) contributed seven kills, 12 digs and five blocks. Sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 19 digs, and Streib had career highs of nine kills and 11 digs.

The Bulls had 14 team blocks in the match compared to the RedHawks' eight, but Miami hit better (.220 to .175) and had 12 service aces compared to three by the Bulls. Alex Ratcliff led the RedHawks with 17 kills, while Emily Schroeder (12 kills, 17 digs, four blocks) and Reihman (11 kills, 11 digs, three blocks) both recorded double-doubles. Jeanna Staun had 13 kills and a team-high six aces.

Brown's 47 assists tonight give her an even 800 assists for the season and 3,865 for her career. She passed former record-holder Barb Tinus (3,848 career assists, 1984-87) on UB's all-time career assists list.

The Bulls next host Bowling Green at 6 pm Saturday in Alumni Arena.
