Bulls Drop 3-1 Decision to Miami Volleyball

Bouie, Matikosh and Ryder Post Double Figures in Kills to Lead Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - Three Bulls posted double figures in kills and sophomore Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and senior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) both recorded double-doubles, but the University at Buffalo volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (30-25, 25-30, 30-27, 30-21) to visiting Miami University at Alumni Arena. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in the Mid-American Conference while Miami improves to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the MAC.

The Bulls hurt themselves with 12 attack errors in game one, allowing the RedHawks to build a 20-14 lead before they started to mount a comeback. A service ace by Matikosh got the Bulls within one, 23-22, but Miami remained in control and ended the game with a 30-25 score on a kill by junior Erika Eagan. After falling behind 8-4 to start game two, Buffalo regrouped to earn a win by the same 30-25 score. The Bulls outhit Miami in game two .357 to .111, and freshman Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) recorded three of her seven kills on the night, with her final kill giving the Bulls the game. Buffalo jumped out to a 16-9 lead in game three before Miami came back to tie things up at 24-24 on a service ace by senior Lee Ann Karr. Miami junior Kelly McCullough had four of her six kills in the game after that point to help the RedHawks earn a 30-27 victory and gain a 2-1 advantage in the match. The RedHawks kept that momentum in game four and got seven kills from junior Jennifer Eaton to end the match with a 30-21 win.

Buffalo sophomore Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) posted a team-high 14 kills, and she has now recorded double figures in kills in six of her last eight matches. Matikosh had 13 kills, four service aces and a team-high 13 digs, and senior Wendy Ryder (Bernhards Bay, NY/Genesee CC) had 12 kills and a team-high three blocks. LaCour finished the afternoon with 41 assists and 11 digs. Miami was led by McCullough with 17 kills and seven blocks, and Eaton with 12 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks. As a team, the RedHawks had a 13 to four advantage in blocks during the match.

The Bulls remain home for a 7 pm match on Tuesday, October 9 against Colgate before hosting Western Michigan at 7 pm on Friday, October 12 and Ball State on Sunday, October 14 at Noon.
