Buffalo loses 15-13 in fifth game; Matikosh posts match-high 20 kills

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team made a run for its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season, but came up just short with a 15-13 loss in game five to the visiting Western Michigan Broncos at Alumni Arena. The Bulls lost games one and three by 32-30 and 30-25 scores, but both times rebounded to tie the match up with 30-24 and 30-23 wins in games two and four, respectively.

The Bulls (8-11 overall, 0-5 MAC) were led by junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with a match-high 20 kills, 17 digs and six service aces.

The Bulls were up 20-16 in game one before the Broncos (7-9 overall, 2-2 MAC) tied things up and eventually ended the game at 32-30 on a block assist by Carman Malone and Angela Sillmon. The Broncos went up in game two 20-16, but the Bulls took a 23-22 lead on a kill by senior Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) and closed the match with a 14-4 run to earn the 30-24 win and tie the match at one game apiece. The Broncos led by as many as seven points in game three and easily earned a 30-25 win, but the Bulls forced a fifth game with a 30-23 win in game four. Western Michigan led in that game 9-4, but the Bulls tied things up at 11-11, took their first lead of the game at 16-15 on an ace by Matikosh, and never trailed after that. In game five, Buffalo jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Broncos came storming back to go up by three, 10-7. The Bulls tied the score at 12-12 on another ace by Matikosh, but the Broncos went up 14-12 on a kill by Amanda Fry and a Buffalo attacking error. A kill by sophomore Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) was the Bulls' last point in the match before WMU finished things off with a kill by Malone to end the game at 15-13.
