Volleyball Weekly ReleaseBULLS SHUT OUT CANISIUS The Bulls picked up their fourth win of the season on Wednesday, September 27, defeating local rival Canisius College in three games, 15-6, 15-5, 15-12. Junior Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) led the Bulls' attack with eight kills and junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) posted a match-high 11 total blocks, including a UB-record 10 block assists, to lead Buffalo defensively. Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) finished the night with five kills and a match-high eight digs. BUFFALO STILL LOOKING FOR FIRST MAC WIN On Friday, September 29, Buffalo was swept in three games at Eastern Michigan. The Eagles pulled out a 15-10 win in the opening game of the match before dominating the Bulls in games two and three, winning by 15-3 and 15-2 scores. Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bulls with six kills and six digs, and Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) posted a match-high 10 digs to go along with three kills. Junior Wendy Ryder (Bernhards Bay, NY/Genesee Community College) finished with four kills and junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) contributed 15 assists from her setter position. MILESTONE WEEK The Bulls recorded 34 block assists last week against Canisius, setting a school record for block assists in a three-game match. The previous record was 27 block assists, recorded on two different occasions during the 1995 season. In addition, junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) recorded a school-record 10 block assists. The previous record of nine was shared by Cathy Novocilsky (vs. Cornell, 10/1/94) and Kathy Brinkworth (at Valparaiso, 10/21/95). Courbat's 11 total blocks for the match tied her career high. Courbat recorded 13 total blocks during the week, pushing her past the 100-career blocks plateau. Courbat currently has 112 career blocks, including 28 so far this season, her second with the Bulls. Juniors Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) and Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) also reached milestones during the week. Barfuss surpassed the 400-career digs plateau and the 500-career kills plateau. She now has 411 digs and 501 kills for her career. Shiels went over 700 career digs two weeks ago in the Bulls' match against Northern Illinois. Her six digs last week give her 707 for her career. THIS COMING WEEK Buffalo (4-10 overall, 0-3 MAC) will have three opportunities this week to pick up its first conference win of the 2000 season. The Bulls play at Akron on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:30 pm and then travel to Miami on Friday, October 6 and to Ball State on Saturday, October 7. Both weekend matches are scheduled to start at 7 pm.
