Morzenti Digs For Milestone As Bulls Beat Akron

Nikki Morzenti becomes just the fifth player to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in UB history

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) became just the fifth player in UB volleyball history to reach to the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig mark as she notched her 14th dig on the match-clinching point during Buffalo’s 3-0 victory over Akron, Friday night at Alumni Arena. The win put the Bulls at 12-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The 12 wins eclipse last season’s total of 11 victories.

UB coasted to a victory in the first game, recording seven service aces en route to a 30-16 victory. Buffalo would complete the match with victories of 30-28 and 30-21, respectively. Morzenti lead the Bulls with a match-high 14 kills and completed the double-double with her 14 digs. Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) also finished in double digits with 12 kills on the evening. Junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) finished with a match-high 16 digs.

Freshman Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) recorded four of UB’s 11 service aces, hitting three consecutive aces in the first game. Mapé and Morzenti each recorded three and Ellen Robertson (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) notched one. Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) finished with a match-best 34 assists.

UB managed to outblock Akron, 9-3. Sophomores Rachel Smith (Churchville, NY/Churchville) and Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) each finished with four total blocks. Morzenti ended with three, including a solo block.

UB hit .438 in the first game and ended it with seven straight points from Mapé. In the third and final game, the Zips jumped out to a 16-11 lead, but UB went on a 9-2 run, including six straight point from Fensten. Up 23-19, Morzenti served the Bulls to four straight points and Garcia then took it the rest of the way, serving UB to its final three points, which were all kills from Mapé.

Akron (7-9, 1-2 MAC) was led by eight kills a piece from Molly Rutledge and Brionna Patterson. Colleen Dryja was one of three Zips in double digits in digs, with a team-high 14 and Kara Smith notched 28 assists.

The Bulls remain home tomorrow night as they wrap up a four-match home stretch when they host Ball State. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
