Volleyball Falls to Marshall, 3-1

Lindsay Matikosh leads Bulls with 16 kills and 12 digs

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Marshall this afternoon at Alumni Arena, 30-25, 29-31, 30-24, 30-17. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-American Conference, while Marshall improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.

The Bulls jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game one, but Marshall rallied back behind the play of Isabell Anderer to take a 30-25 decision and go up 1-0 in the match. Game two was just the opposite with Marshall holding early leads of 10-5, 19-11 and 20-13 before Buffalo rallied back to even things up.

The Bulls never led in the game until a kill by sophomore Kathryn Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) put them up 30-29, and a solo block by junior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) on an attack attempt by Heidi Kuethe ended the game at 31-29 in UB's favor. The Thundering Herd was up 29-20 in game three before the Bulls began a rally to get within five, 29-24, but an attacking error by Bouie gave Marshall their final point in the game for a 30-24 victory. The Thundering Herd kept that momentum going into game four and easily earned a 30-17 win to end the match.

The Bulls were led by junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs, and Bouie added 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) also posted double figures in kills with 10, and Henry finished with a match-high 17 digs.

The Bulls are next in action at Kent State on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 pm. They then return home to host Northern Illinois on Friday, October 4 and Western Michigan on Saturday, October 5. Both matches are set to begin at 7 pm in Alumni Arena.
