Bulls Pick Up First Conference Victory With Win Over Akron

Sarah Streib records a career-high 11 kills

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team picked up its first conference victory and ended a 12-match losing skid as the Bulls defeated Akron, 3-1, Thursday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls put forth a total team effort with numerous players setting personal milestones.

The Bulls took the match 30-27, 30-24, 18-30, 30-27 as they were led by a near triple-double from freshman Lindsey Schlegel (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) who finished the match with nine kills, 41 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Maria Mezzadri (Livonia, MI/Livonia Stevenson) led the way for UB with 13 kills, while senior Sarah Streib (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) recorded a career-high 11 kills as she saw action in all four games. In fact, Streib had two more kills against the Zips then she had during the entire 2006 season. Streib added nine digs and three assists. Junior Kate Love (Pittsford, NY/Pitsford Sutherland/Temple) added seven kills.

Defensively, UB had four players in double figures in the digging department, led by 23 digs from senior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek). Three players had 11 digs, including Schlegel, sophomore Ellen Robertson (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) and freshman Jenna Gabello (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit). Gabello also had a career-high three service aces, which was tied for tops in the match.

Akron was led by 15 kills from Elizabeth Martin and 14 kills from Brittany Fox. Kara Smith had 41 assists, while Shayla Gilbert added 15 digs for the Zips.

The Bulls will be back in action on Saturday night as they travel to Ball State for a 7:00 pm match. Tonight’s match against the Zips will air on tape delay on Time Warner Cable 13 with airings on Sept. 29 at 3:00 pm, Sept. 30 at 2:30 pm and Oct. 1 at 8:00 pm.
