Volleyball Falls to EMU, 3-1

Nikki Morzenti and Molly Schrantz lead Bulls with 17 kills apiece

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team battled with the Mid-American Conference's top-ranked team this afternoon in Alumni Arena, but the Bulls came out on the losing end of a four-game match with the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Eagles pulled out a 31-29 win in game one before the Bulls tied the match with a dramatic 32-30 win in game two. The Eagles ended the match with 30-17 and 30-21 wins in games three and four.

Junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) and freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) each had 17 kills in the match to lead the Bulls' attack. The duo combined to break a 30-30 tie in game two, Schrantz with a kill and Morzenti with a service ace that gave the Bulls the 32-30 win. Schrantz also added 16 digs and three blocks and Morzenti finished with 12 digs and three blocks. Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led Buffalo with 21 digs, just four away from her career high, and freshman Wendy Haskell (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) had 14 digs as the libero. Sophomore setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished with 42 assists, 13 digs, four blocks and two kills, and senior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) tied her career high with a match-high nine blocks, including three solos.

The Eagles (12-1 overall, 2-0 MAC) were led by Katie Wagenmaker with 19 kills and eight blocks , Jennifer Nighswander with 12 kills and 24 digs and Becky Baltare with 10 kills and 22 digs.

The Bulls (5-9 overall, 0-2 MAC) are at Canisius for a 7 pm non-conference match on Wednesday, October 1 before traveling to Miami (OH) on Friday, October 3 for a 7 pm match. Buffalo returns home on Sunday, October 5 to face Bowling Green at 2 pm in Alumni Arena.
