Bulls Drop MAC Opener at Kent State

The University at Buffalo volleyball team easily took game one, 30-19, but then dropped the next three games, 30-18, 30-27, 30-14, to fall to host Kent State by a 3-1 margin Friday night in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) led Buffalo with 13 kills and 13 digs, and junior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) also recorded a double-double with 11 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. She had six kills and three blocks, including one solo, in game one to lead the Bulls to their lone victory. Senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) and junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) each had eight kills, and junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) added six kills and a match-high six blocks. Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) had 36 assists, six digs and two blocks, and sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) finished with a team-high 19 digs. The Golden Flashes finished the match with a .228 hitting percentage compared to Buffalo's .152, and they had 13 service aces compared to the Bulls' four. Buffalo had the advantage in blocks, 10-8.

Bobcats Too Much For Bulls

On Saturday, the Bulls dropped a 30-16, 30-27, 30-16 decision to the defending Mid-American Conference champion Ohio Bobcats. The Bobcats, who are receiving votes in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll, extended the nation's longest active home court winning streak to 31 matches with the three-game victory. Brown had a team-high 19 digs along with 27 assists and two kills to lead the Bulls. Weekley was the only player to reach double digits in kills with 10, and Garcia had 18 digs. The Bulls hit just .130 in the match compared to Ohio's .289.

Morzenti Pushes Streak of Double-Doubles to Five

Morzenti led the Bulls with 13 kills and 13 digs in their Mid-American Conference opener against Kent State on Friday night to extend her streak of consecutive double-doubles to five matches. Morzenti saw the streak come to an end the following night against Ohio when she finished with six kills and five digs. Morzenti currently leads the Bulls with 3.36 kills per game and is second on the team with 2.96 digs per game. She is just three kills away from recording the 800th of her career.

Diggin' It Up

Garcia recorded her 600th career dig in the Bulls' four-game loss to Kent State on Friday night. She currently has 622 career digs, including a team-high 215 this season (4.06 per game).

Brown had a career-high 19 digs at Ohio on Saturday. She currently has 827 career digs and is inching closer to UB's top 10 list. Kathy Brinkworth (1994-97) holds the 10th spot with 991 career digs.

The Bulls continue on the road with conference matches at Akron at 7 pm Thursday, September 29 and at Ball State at 8 pm Saturday, October 1.
