Volleyball Weekly ReleaseBULLS BEGIN MAC SEASON
The Bulls began the Mid-American portion of their schedule last weekend, hosting Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. On Friday, September 22, the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas earned 15-12 wins in the first and third games of the match and held off a Bulls' comeback attempt in the second game for a 15-10 win. Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) posted 14 kills while freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) recorded a match-high 18 digs. Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) had 31 assists, and junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) added seven kills, six digs and two blocks to the Bulls' effort. On Saturday, September 23, the Bulls lost a 3-0 match to Northern Illinois, the top team in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies entered the match with a league-best 10-2 record, and they quickly earned their 11th victory of the season by scores of 15-6, 15-0, 15-5 over the Bulls. Buffalo was led by Matikosh with a team-high seven kills and five digs. Shiels added six kills while Courbat and Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) finished with five kills apiece. LaCour posted 19 assists from her setter position.
DEPTH ON THE BENCH
The Bulls have a deep bench and head coach Nadine Lilavois has been taking advantage of that this season. All 12 players on the roster have seen playing time this season, and seven of them have played in every match. Only three players, juniors Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Amelia Liddle (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), have started all 12 matches this season, and only Shiels and freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) have played in all 44 games. The chance for everyone to get playing time this season will bode well for next year as the Bulls will return their entire squad in 2001. Lilavois' 2000 team has nine juniors, one sophomore, two freshmen and no seniors.
LACOUR IN THE MAC
Junior setter Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) has consistently been among the MAC's top assist getters this season. In the MAC's most recent statistics (through games of Sunday, September 24), LaCour is in 11th place in the conference with 9.32 assists per game. She has 410 of Buffalo's 458 assists this season. For her career, LaCour has 742 assists.
THIS COMING WEEK
Buffalo travels to nearby Canisius College to take on the Golden Griffins on Wednesday, September 27 at 7 pm. The Bulls then continue MAC play at Eastern Michigan on Friday, September 29 at 7 pm. Buffalo holds a 51-4 all-time series lead over Canisius but it has never beaten Eastern Michigan. The Eagles own a 4-0 all-time series lead.
