Bulls Go Undefeated at WNY Holiday Inn Volleyball Invitational

Lindsay Matikosh and Molly Schrantz named to All-Tournament Team; Head coach Sally Kus records 100th career collegiate coaching victory

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team finished the Western New York Holiday Inn Invitational with an undefeated 3-0 record after defeating Youngstown State and Niagara at Alumni Arena this afternoon. Buffalo began the day with a 3-1 win over YSU (30-14, 30-28, 23-30, 30-18) and then shut out Niagara, 3-0 (30-19, 30-15, 30-28).

The Bulls had defeated Canisius on Saturday night, 3-2 (24-30, 30-32, 30-28, 30-17, 17-15) at the Koessler Center. Junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and sophomore Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) were both named to the eight-player All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament.

This afternoon's wins improve Buffalo's record to 8-6 overall, and the Bulls have now won four matches in a row for the first time since starting the 1999 season with a 4-0 record. Buffalo's win against Niagara was also head coach Sally Kus' 100th career collegiate coaching victory. Kus came to Buffalo with a 92-54 collegiate coaching record in four seasons at Daemen College, and NAIA institution.

Against Youngstown State, Schrantz led the Bulls with 19 kills, tying her career high, and 12 digs, and Matikosh added 15 kills and a match-high 24 digs. Junior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) also posted double figures in kills with 11, and she also recorded a team-high eight blocks. Freshman Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished with 48 assists, and sophomore Kathryn Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) contributed 13 digs from the libero position.

Against the Purple Eagles, Matikosh (18 kills, 10 digs) and Schrantz (16 kills, 12 digs) both posted double-doubles in kills and digs, and Henry added 14 digs to the Bulls' effort. Brown finished with 45 assists in the three-game match, and Bouie and freshman Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) each had a match-high four blocks.

The Bulls (8-6 overall) will put their four-game winning streak on the line when they open the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule on Thursday, September 26 at Akron at 7:30 pm. Their home conference opener is on Saturday, September 28 against Marshall at 3 pm.
